A Sons of Anarchy spinoff is closer than ever to becoming a reality at FX.
The cable network announced on Wednesday morning that the proposed series will be title “Mayans MC” and it will kick off with a pilot written by Elgin James.
James and Kurt Sutter are credited as co-creaters of the proposed spinoff, with the latter, of course, having been the brains behind Sons of Anarchy.
According to the official FX press release, Mayans MC will be a “a dark, visceral family drama that takes a new look at the most American of icons, the 1% outlaw, this time, reflected through a Latino lens."
Sutter had previously talked about a prequel to his smash hit series, one that would follow the founders of SAMCRO, but that idea has not gotten very much traction.
“I wanted to find a strong, unique Latino voice," Sutter says of why he's working with James, adding:
"Because I didn’t think a white guy from Jersey should be writing about Latin culture and traditions. Elgin is that voice."
Sons of Anarchy wrapped up its seven-season run in 2014 with a controversial finale.
Sutter’s follow-up, The Bastard Executioner, only lasted for one season on FX.
It was canceled last year.
On Sons of Anarchy, The Mayans Motorcycle Club controlled northern California and all of Nevada aside from Las Vegas.
The President of their Oakland chapter was named Marcus Alvarez and all of their members appeared to be Hispanic.
The club was mostly on good terms with Jax Teller and company throughout the run of the show, often teaming up with SAMCRO against common enemies.
No casting announcement have been made yet for Mayans MC, nor has the show yet received a full season order.
It would stand to reason, however, that Emilio Rivera would be brought back to reprise the role of Alvarez.
But will you tune in for it if/when it does?
