The Best of 2014: 13 Foundation-Shaking Finales

Each of the TV Fanatic staff picks for best finale (season or midseason) of 2014 did something to really shake up the she when it returns.

The Vampire Diaries killed off two major characters. Sure, one has already returned, but even taking the chance of offing two favorites is a big deal. On the Bates Motel season ender, Norman was revealed to be the man we all remember from Psycho – a genuinely scary dude.

On The Mentalist, after finally clearing the slate of Red John, love was in the air.

1. The Vampire Diaries Season 5 Finale

Last year's TVD Season 5 finale was actually awesome. After a completely awful season, they pulled it together for the finale. Stefan was dead in the penultimate episode so that left the stakes high, the other side was collapsing, Liv and Bonnie did some work and got everyone back including ALARIC, everyone that is except for Damon and Bonnie. And when the lights blinked out with Damon and Bonnie holding hands, mid-sentence I was totally freaking out.
